Dimensions and units in the Canada Post Plugin for Woocommerce

By March 4, 2015 2 Comments

The Canada Post Woocommerce Shipping Plugin by truemedia for WordPress is a flexible and affordable solution for those looking to ship their products using the Canada Post courier.  It features live shipping rates calculated directly from your website, fully integrated parcel tracking and multilingual/bilingual support in English and French, ensuring all Canadian users are suppoorted.

A valuable feature of truemedia‘s Canada Post Shipping Plugin for Woocommerce is their advanced “Box-packing algorithm” that allows you to define standard box sizes used by your business and virtually pack an order into the appropriate box – this means more accurate shipping quotes for your customers, calculated directly from your website!

One question commonly asked about this plugin is related to the dimension and weight units used by the Canada Post Woocommerce Shipping Plugin by truemedia, specifically whether one can change the dimensions in the plugin from ‘cm’ to ‘inches’ and weights from ‘kg’ to ‘lbs’. After some research and contacting the plugin developers as well as Canada Post, we have found the answer to this:

Changing the default setting in your Woocommerce settings does not change the plugin’s used units, however it does change the behavior of the plugin, converting your product’s units to work with the units used by this plugin.

It would seem that Canada Post only accepts dimensions in cm units and weights in kg units with their rate calculation system.

As such the developers of the plugin needed to ‘lock’ the units shown on the plugin settings page to cm and kg units regardless your default setting, in order to be compatible with Canada Post’s API system.
However the plugin does in fact convert your product dimensions and weights from inch to cm and lbs to kg for use with live rate calculations and plugin features, for instance with the included box packing feature.

At RevolvedMedia, we highly recommend the Canada Post Woocommerce Shipping Plugin by truemedia for it’s affordability, flexibility, and accuracy and look forward to seeing future updates and projects from this developer.

I don’t think this is correct – I use this plugin and it has not been converting my woocommerce set inches into cm, which has resulted in less shipping options showing up.

We contacted the developer directly for this response. If you like we’d be happy to take a look and help you to locate the cause of the discrepancy and correct it on your site.
